Jim is the 2016 Ultra Runner of the Year and is currently ranked #1 in the world by the International Trail Running Association’s Performance Index. Jim is off to a fast start in 2017, winning 3 of 3 races, all in course records, including Ultra Trail World Tour’s Tarawera 102K in New Zealand, Spain’s Carrera Alto Sil 31K, and Gorge Waterfalls 100K in Oregon. Picking up right where he left off, in 2016 alone, Jim won 9 out of 10 trail races, setting course records in 6, including the Bandera 100K, the Lake Sonoma 50M, and JFK 50M. Jim also set the Fastest Known Times for the Rim-to-Rim and Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim crossings of the Grand Canyon in October 2016. Jim knows no fear, having led Western States 100M, his first 100M ever, through 93M. At that point, he had outpaced his pacer, and was 30 minutes under course record time before veering off course by five miles and finishing 20th.  While Jim was disappointed, this is how veteran writer, coach and athlete Mario Fraioli described Jim’s performance in the morning shakeout:

Watching Jim Walmsley light up the course like a pyromaniac before taking a wrong turn somewhere in the 94th mile and ultimately finishing in 20th place was something else. End result aside, it was one of the most impressive, awe-inspiring, straight-up ballsy displays of racing I’ve seen in 18 years of being involved with competitive running and it was exciting as all hell to see it unfold in front of my own eyes. Say what you want about Walmsley’s bold pre-race plans and kamikaze racing strategy, but it takes a large set of cojones to run that hard for that long and even bigger ones to finish when your day totally turns to total shit.
